Las Vegas, NV (PRWEB) October 11, 2012

Ray Bloom, Chairman and Founder of the IMEX Group, announced the 40th anniversary of Destination Management at a press conference held at the ACCESS Destination Services booth on Oct. 10 during the IMEX America tradeshow. While it has become an established part of the MICE industry lexicon, "Destination Management" was first used in the early 1970s. Destination management executives, industry media and other hospitality industry professionals from around the world convened to acknowledge the milestone.

The term "Destination Management" was coined in the United States in 1972 by Phil Lee, Founder of California Leisure Consultants (now ACCESS Destination Services). Phil subsequently convinced the San Diego Convention & Visitors Bureau to officially adopt the term to distinguish full service DMCs from a variety of single-service providers and “ground operators,” as they were previously called.

Across the Atlantic in Europe, Tom Risbecker of Risbecker International in Sweden began referring to his company and those like it as "Destination Management Companies" in 1982. Soon after, the phrase was adopted by his fellow euromic members.“ Tom also used the term to differentiate their services from those of ground operators," says Giancarlo Carrera, President of euromic events & destination management partnership.

Like Kleenex or Jacuzzi, the term became so popular and in such wide use that it is now the industry defining standard. Today, a Google search of “destination management company” turns up more than 45 million results!

"We all benefit from elevating the level of understanding and professionalism among our industry peers, partners, clients and suppliers. It is an honor to continue to expand on my father's vision," says Chris Lee, DMCP, CEO of ACCESS Destination Services and son of Phil Lee.

Both ACCESS Destination Services and Risbecker International are owned and operated by the next generation of DMC leaders; Chris Lee of ACCESS and Pauline Risbecker Kim of Risbecker International.

Chris is one of the original founders of the Association of Destination Management Executives (ADME). ADME was founded in 1995 with the mission of increasing the professionalism and effectiveness of destination management. The Destination Management Certified Professional (DMCP) program reflects this mission. The association has also evolved and was recently renamed ADME International (ADMEI), reflecting its global membership.
