Central Consulting Group (CCG) has been honored with the 2012 Alfred P. Sloan Award for Excellence in Workplace Effectiveness and Flexibility for its use of flexibility as an effective workplace strategy to increase business and employee success.

“We’re delighted to be recognized with this prestigious award,” said CCG Managing Partner Jim Falkanger. “It validates the philosophy we’ve had since we founded the company in 2000, that employees perform best and are most satisfied when they have control over their work schedule and environment. Since the beginning, we’ve allowed employees to work remotely and determine their own schedules. We think that’s a contributing factor to our low turnover rate,” he said.

Another reason the firm chose to offer a flexible workplace was to aid in recruiting. “Our business requires us to have topnotch consultants who can help our customers maximize their software investment,” Falkanger explained. “When we find a good consultant, we don’t want geography to be a barrier. Plus, most of our consultants travel to see customers across North America, so the location of their main office becomes immaterial.”

This award is part of the national When Work Works project administered by the Families and Work Institute and the Society for Human Resource Management. It recognizes employers of all sizes and types in Minnesota and across the country. Other companies receiving the award in 2012 include Deloitte; Dorsey & Whitney, LLP; KPMG; BDO USA, LLP; and Architecture Technology Corporation.

The Sloan Awards are unique for their rigorous, two-step selection process, which involves an evaluation of employers’ flexibility programs and practices, and a confidential employee survey. All applicants are measured against national norms from the National Study of Employers.

“As a recipient of the 2012 Sloan Award, CCG ranks in the top 20 percent of employers nationally in terms of its programs, policies and culture for creating an effective and flexible workplace,” said Ellen Galinsky, president of Families and Work Institute. “In addition, what makes this honor so special is that their employees have corroborated this, affirming that it is indeed an effective and flexible workplace.”
