Las Vegas, NV (PRWEB) October 17, 2012
President of SLEEPTEST.com, Elias Kalantzis, will be taking part in the 2012 “Sleep Summit” on Oct.18 through Oct. 20, at the Planet Hollywood in Las Vegas. This will be the first year that Kalantzis is taking part in the summit. SleepTest.com is an online awareness resource, dedicated to those who feel that they may be at risk or suffering from sleep apnea.
“I have made it my mission to spread awareness on sleep apnea, the dangers of untreated sleep apnea and effective treatments for sleep apnea,” Kalantzis said. Pre-scheduled interviews and photo opportunities are available to the press, upon request.
Joining Kalantzis, will be specialists, educators, doctors and surgeons from around the nation. They will be joining hands to educate dentists on sleep apnea and how they can be part of the treatment team, to those who suffer from this “silent killer.”
"I'm very excited to be able to take part in such an impactful event," Kalantzis said. “Many people are not aware of the potential health problems that stem from this epidemic. That’s why it’s known as the silent killer.”
Sleep apnea affects millions of Americans and has recently been linked to cancer and other health related problems, including fatality. It exists in two forms - Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and Central sleep apnea (which takes place in the brain). OSA is the most common form and is caused by a physical obstruction in the airway triggering a person to stop breathing several times throughout the night. Dr. Gregory Carnevale, MD, FAAOA, an ear, nose and throat surgeon from Geneva, New York, will be one of the speakers at the summit. “Dentists are a vital resource in discussing treatment options for patient with OSA,” Carnevale said.
Currently, there are only a select number of dentists that treat sleep apnea patients across the nation, through the use of oral appliance therapy (OAT). Dentists offer OAT by creating a custom fabricated mouth piece that is similar to a retainer. The mouth piece re-positions the jaw and pushes the tongue forward or restrains the tongue to keep the airway open. In addition, dentists are able to work with surgeons and physicians in order to treat sleep apnea sufferers.
There are several options to choose from, when treating sleep apnea. OAT is one of the alternatives to the continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) mask, which is considered to be the ‘gold standard’ for sleep apnea patients for those that can endure it.
“I love the CPAP for those that can tolerate it. The problem is so many people cannot properly and consistently wear the CPAP,” Kalantzis said. “Oral appliance therapy is also an effective alternative for CPAP intolerant people with even severe sleep apnea.”
