With all the doom and gloom financial talk, Americans are still expected to spend a record 8 billion dollars on Halloween purchases this year, up from 7.1 billion in 2011. Since Halloween Costumes are clearly discretionary spending, does this bode well for the 2012 Christmas Holiday Season?     What’s really behind this huge Halloween sales increase?

A big part of it is online Halloween sales, up 15% again this year. We asked Michael Aronesty, co-owner of, one of the Internet’s larger suppliers of costuming and party items, for his take on this surprising increase in Halloween purchases.

“I was genuinely expecting a lackluster season with unemployment and under-employment above 8%. But about a week after school started, things started to pick up."

What folks are wanting this year are more accurately represented popular characters. We specialize in Cosplay Costumes. These are not generally available in the cookie-cutter Halloween shops that pop up all across the country this time of year. Marvel and Disney costumes are also very popular. We have added deluxe theatrical versions of The Avengers characters like Thor, Captain America, The Amazing Spiderman, Black Widow, Hawkeye, Batman and more.

We are very busy this season at, but we are not falling behind. We are able to ship out orders on the next day and due to our volume, our delivered prices are lower than our clients can get at Halloween shops and the variety is much more interesting.

The option to have a custom made costume tailored for you also exists at Moon Costumes. Clients love it when they can show up in something that nobody else has.

Without a doubt, however, the late entry winner for most popular costume is going to be Big Bird. Ever since Mitt Romney fired Big Bird, we have not been able to keep these costumes in stock. All we have left is about one hundred pieces of ladies large Big Bird which works for many teens as well. A larger number of pets will also be donning Halloween costumes this year.”

What remains to be seen is whether this Halloween boom will carry over into Christmas. It just may be that Big Bird can save the economy after all.
