According to Natural Solutions Magazine, consumers are learning that the skin care products they have trusted for years contain dangerous toxic ingredients. Health Food Emporium responds to consumer demand for safe alternatives by expanding its inventory.

The days are long gone when women can enjoy a foamy bubble bath, fragrant skin and hair treatments and lots of hair spray to hold that perfect hairdo in place. Researchers are now finding that common skin and hair care products contain chemicals that may lead to problems from skin irritation to cancer (Natural Living Magazine 10/7/08).

An average consumer who uses 15 to 25 different personal care products a day will be exposed to over 200 different chemicals. Are you aware of the effects of the chemicals in your personal care products? Everything from shampoo, conditioner, body lotion, deodorant, and hand soap to sunscreen carry loads of chemicals. In fact, some of the chemicals found in personal care products are also used in heavy manufacturing industries to grease gears, stabilize pesticides and soften plastics.

According to the Environmental Working Group watchdog Cosmetics Database: "While some companies make products that are safe to eat, other companies choose to use known human carcinogens or developmental toxins. Nearly all these chemicals can penetrate the skin, and some we ingest directly from our lips or hands. More than one-third of all personal care products contain at least one ingredient linked to cancer. When risky and unstudied chemicals are used in cosmetics, the stakes can be high--unlike trace contaminants in food or tap water, chemicals in cosmetics are base ingredients."

Of the thousands of chemicals used in cosmetics, only 11 percent have been assessed for health and safety by the FDA or other government agency. But that’s not all. The Environmental Working Group (EWG) “Skin Deep Database” says that one-third of all personal care products contain at least one chemical linked to cancer.

Gail Bowman, owner of, an online health food store, says, "We have carried two great brands of organic skin care products for years, Aubrey Organics and Miessence. However, with the recent developments in the news about toxic agents in baby care products, our customers are demanding more choices. We are proud to be able to offer Beyond Organic Skin and Body Care products in addition to the great brands that we are already offering!"

We live in a toxic world. Anyone who gets caught in traffic is breathing in toxic car fumes. The meat we eat is full of antibiotics and hormones. Even the carpets in our homes give off toxic fumes. Let me ask you a question: What is more important to you? Using your favorite old brand of shampoo, or learning about organic brands to help reduce the toxin load on your system? Take care of your body. It's the only one you get.
