Miami, FL (PRWEB) October 12, 2012
The collapse of a section of a parking garage under construction at the Miami-Dade Community College campus in Doral, Florida, killed three people. A fourth man remains missing and eight workers were hurt, reported CBS News. Chances are this is a tragedy that could have been prevented said Miami injury attorney Michael S. Steinger, a founding partner of Steinger, Iscoe & Greene.
According to CBS News (10/11/12), the collapse of the $22.5 million, five-story concrete garage was “pancake-style” with floor upon floor collapsing from the roof to the ground.
“Accidents happen, but building collapses are generally preventable accidents. Most often the collapses are due to design, construction or maintenance defects,” said Michael S. Steinger, an injury lawyer for more than a decade.
Working on construction projects can be dangerous. Serious injury and even death can occur as a result of a construction accident and there are a wide variety of risks on the job site. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, 41 people died while doing construction in Florida in 2011. Many other workers were injured.
“Luckily, there were no students in or near the garage because it was under construction,” said Steinger.
In addition to Florida workers’ compensation, victims of building collapses or other serious injury accidents may be entitled to compensation for medical expenses, lost income, disability, pain and suffering, and other costs and money damages.
