alleging their children suffered birth defects after the mothers took Depakote during pregnancy
San Diego, CA (PRWEB) October 17, 2012
The media spotlight is often a double-edged sword. No one knows this better than Susan DeMatteo and people who suffer from Depakote Side Effects. And yet, gossip and rumor-mongering aside, the real story here is being overlooked according to Sean Burke of AttorneyOne.
According to court documents, on September 6th, 2012, Susan DeMatteo and more than a dozen other plaintiffs filed a lawsuit in St. Clair County Circuit Court (case no. 12-L-462) alleging their children suffered birth defects after the mothers took Depakote during pregnancy. Depakote is a drug, manufactured by Abbott Laboratories, most commonly prescribed for psychiatric conditions like manic depressive disorder (bipolar disorder) and to prevent migraine headaches. In the lawsuit plaintiffs claim that their children were born with spina bifida, neural tube defects and other birth defects.
The New England Journal of Medicine study published in June 2010 revealed that the risk of spina bifida from Depakote may be 12 times higher with use of the medication during pregnancy.

As Mr. Burke, director of Media Relations for AttorneyOne.com, added, “What all this information really illustrates is that threat from Depakote remains. As the FDA published on May 7th, 2012, the Office of Criminal Investigations and the US Department of Justice press release informed that Abbott Laboratories Inc. has pleaded guilty and agreed to pay $1.5 billion to resolve its criminal and civil liability arising from the company’s unlawful promotion of the prescription drug Depakote for uses not approved as safe and effective by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
