Contract Staffing Recruiters, a Connecticut-based executive recruiting firm, has launched two new online career boards and has added new clients, partially due to its contract staffing business.
President Mike Toohey, who has been recruiting since 1998, established Contract Staffing Recruiters when he opened the job board CareersInConnecticut.com in 2000. The firm started by providing large companies such as GE and Pitney Bowes contract recruiters who worked on-site to provide contractors and direct hires. As Toohey recognized staffing needs in small and medium-sized businesses that could not afford an on-site recruiter, he expanded his business model to service those businesses from his firm’s Connecticut offices. Unlike many recruiting firms that concentrate on a specific niche, Contract Staffing Recruiters prides itself on its ability to help clients fill openings for any position or discipline, regardless of whether it is a contract or direct-hire need.
Contract Staffing Recruiters has been growing rapidly in the past year. In addition to adding clients across the country, the firm recently launched two new career boards: CareersInNewYork.com and CareersInNorthDakota.com
Toohey credits much of the firm’s success to the contract staffing side of the business, which is complemented by the use of Top Echelon® Contracting (TEC)’s back-office services. As the Employer of Record for most of the contractors Toohey and his team place, TEC handles all of the financial, administrative, and legal tasks associated with a contract placement, including employee paperwork, background checks, legal contracts, timesheet collection, payroll processing and funding, tax withholding, benefits, Workers’ Compensation, invoicing, and the collection of accounts receivables.
Without the use of TEC, Toohey said they would not have the time or resources to take on the amount of contract staffing business that they have today around the country. For example, TEC handles the entire financial picture, including payroll funding so that recruiters don’t have to get a line of credit to pay contractors.
“Top Echelon Contracting allows us to say yes to things we wouldn’t normally be able to say yes to,” Toohey said. “We don’t have to turn down business like we did in the past. They allow us to focus more on our core business with our permanent placements and career boards.”
Toohey has noticed an increase in companies requesting contractors over the past 18 months. Specifically, he is finding that many companies are opting for contract-to-direct arrangements in the wake of the recession so they can try out a candidate before they commit to hiring them directly.
“Companies are still a little leery and so are candidates,” Toohey said. “It’s like ‘Do we want to get married on the first date, or have a few dates and see how it goes.'”
