The Chicago Botanical Garden’s EnergySmart Roof® and vegetated green roof protect leading scientists working there to foster plant conservation and conduct research in environmental issues.

We have a long standing commitment to energy efficiency and sustainability, said Sika Sarnafil's Peter D’Antonio. The first green roof protected by Sika Sarnafil’s waterproofing membrane was installed back in 1978 at Phillips Exeter Academy.

Sika Sarnafil, the worldwide market leader in thermoplastic roofing and waterproofing systems, announced today the green, energy efficient roof on the Chicago Botanic Garden’s Daniel F. and Ada L. Rice Plant Conservation Science Center has won a 2012 Green Roof and Wall Award of Excellence.

The Garden’s EnergySmart Roof® and vegetated green roof protect leading scientists working there to foster plant conservation and conduct research in environmental issues that affect plant life like climate change, habitat loss and fragmentation, invasive species, and pollution. The roof also functions as a tool to teach visitors about the environmental benefits of a green roof and serves as a model of an energy-efficient roof by keeping the building and the surrounding environment cooler, and lowering power consumption to help counter the “urban heat island effect” prevalent in cities across the country.

“By offering a variety of commercial roofing and waterproofing systems, we were able to meet the Chicago Botanic Garden’s needs for a white, energy efficient roof as well as a proven waterproofing system,” said Peter D’Antonio, Sika Sarnafil National Sales Manager for Waterproofing Systems.

“We have a long standing commitment to energy efficiency and sustainability,” D’Antonio added. “Sarnafil installed the first vegetated green roof protected by Sika Sarnafil’s waterproofing membrane at Phillips Exeter Academy in Exeter, NH back in 1978.Sika Sarnafil roofs continue to stand the test of time today – providing customers with cost-effective and long-lasting solutions.”

The 2012 Green Roof and Wall Award of Excellence will be presented on Friday, October 19th at CitiesAlive: 10th Annual Green Roof and Wall Conference in Chicago, IL. The winning project will be showcased at Sika Sarnafil booth # 503/504.
