It’s no secret Americans love to eat. Fast food chains made over $100 billion in profits last year and revenues are expected to surpass that in 2012. According to an annual survey conducted by Restaurants.com, Subway was the nation's favorite fast food restaurant with Wendy’s and McDonald’s rounding out the top three mega chains. With more and more fast food restaurants hitting the streets every day, it’s getting harder and harder for one chain to prove they are America’s favorite.
Endless choices, super-sized portions, and low prices can be very persuasive. However, we’re starting to see a trend towards healthy options. Over the summer, McDonald’s unveiled a Favorites Under 400 section on its menu that highlights menu items with 400 calories or less. Thousands of employees have also received training about calories, nutrition, and how they relate to items on the chain’s menu. The move to promote low-calorie offerings comes as the FDA finalizes measures that will require chain restaurants to disclose caloric information on menus and drive-thrus.
