Translation Company is First to Commit to New Open Standards

Translation agency Lingo24 has become the first to implement TAUS’s new common Translation Services API, giving customers greater flexibility and freedom.

TAUS, the translation innovation think tank, designed the web API as a common standard for all language services providers. Instead of customers being “locked in” to one provider, they will be able to easily switch if another company better fits their needs. The development will encourage providers to adopt best practices and foster competition between them.
TAUS and Lingo24 presented the implementation of the API at Localization World in Seattle on Tuesday, an annual conference focusing on global business, translation and localization.

Other leading translation providers are also planning to implement the common standard.
Many companies already use an API, or Application Programming Interface, as quick, easy way for clients to connect with their system and access services. In today’s environment, with services increasingly hosted in the cloud, web APIs simplify workflows and allow complex tasks to be broken down into smaller requests. Translators can start work on a client’s request within minutes of submission.

TAUS developed the Translation Services API specifications in consultation with its members. It is compatible with most content management systems and other standardization initiatives related to translation and localization.

Instead of trying to specify all possible scenarios, they developed a set of interactions covering the most common tasks, such as requesting a translation or checking its progress. The developers intend to build up its specifications following adoption.

Alexandru Szasz, Lingo24’s IT Director, said: “This could drive up standards by increasing competition between providers. Instead of being ‘locked in’ to one translation provider, clients can easily switch using the same standard.

“This type of API brings major benefits to large companies. Some clients might be sending hundreds or thousands of requests a day. Instead of having to copy and paste into an email, they can immediately send a web page for translation.”
