Buyers shopping for the perfect Amelia Island oceanfront condo or Fernandina Beach home may have a great real estate agent working for them, but who do they trust when it comes to finding the perfect mortgage? For Alan Vanderheiden, Prudential Chaplin Willlams Realty's newest preferred lender and a real estate mortgage expert with the Ikon Financial Group in Amelia Island, building a trusting, life-long relationship with clients is paramount.

“My goal is to change the way my clients view the mortgage industry. Due to greed and mis-management in the past, many consumers think all mortgage professional are crooks. I want to change that perception.” said Vanderheiden.

Moving to Florida in 2002, Vanderheiden started in the mortgage business with a friend and has worked as a loan officer with Home Banc Mortgage. In 2007, he was named a partner with B. Stephens Mortgage Brokerage in Fernandina Beach. The Amelia Island / Nassau County Association of Realtors, in 2010, named Vanderheiden the affiliate lender of the year.

“I immerse myself in the mortgage business,” explained Vanderheiden. “And I continue to study the industry – the new mortgage programs and products. I never quit learning or applying myself to this trade. My clients expect it – this is for their benefit.”

Helping people is what Vanderheiden likes: “I truly enjoy helping people understand the mortgage process and dealing with them openly and honestly. Explaining expectations up front reduces everyone’s stress levels.”

Whether working on Fernandina Beach home loans or oceanfront condo financing, Vanderheiden believes in going above-and-beyond and giving more than required. “After all, it’s my reputation on the line,” he states.

As much as he enjoys helping people through the mortgage business, Vanderheiden’s first ambition in high school was to become a major league baseball umpire. While he did attend umpire school for training, he was still a bit too young, so Vanderheiden went on to college before beginning a career in the textile business. Along the way, he spent 25 years umpiring high school and college baseball and softball, and worked six national championships. In 1998, he was inducted into the Georgia Hall of Fame as an umpire.

“The passion I have for umpiring is the same passion I have for my mortgage business and the clients I serve. When someone finds their dream home, my job is to help them make that dream a reality,” said Vanderheiden.
