Advantage Credit Counseling Service, a non-profit company dedicated to helping consumers manage debt, has released a downloadable white paper meant to help consumers understand that maintaining good credit is essential to their overall financial well-being.

The white paper, available on the company website, explains that people with bad credit suffer the consequences of either being denied for loans or being subjected to high interest rates and fees. Credit history is also now commonly used by employers when they make final hiring decisions, so an individual who has a poor credit history could struggle to find a job. Trouble finding employment often exasperates debt issues as consumers fail to make enough money to pay for their debts.

Advantage CCS highlights the importance of obtaining a credit report on a regular basis from TransUnion, Equifax or Experian. These credit reporting agencies are required to provide consumers with a copy of their report once per year, and consumers are able to stagger these requests between the three agencies to get a free report once every four months. Reviewing a credit report allows consumers to discover whether there are discrepancies in the information and provides a basis for determining how to improve credit.

Details related to the contents of a credit report and how to read the report are included in the white paper. Advantage CCS suggests that consumers review information pertaining to personal information, personal loans or other debts, inquiries from lenders and any negative information contained within the report to determine if the information is accurate. Inaccurate information could be indicative of identity theft, and consumers should contact a credit reporting agency immediately if there are any problems with the credit report.

Mistakes can be corrected through a dispute filed with a credit reporting agency. However, negative information that is valid can only be taken off of a report after a period of approximately seven years. In the meantime, consumers can improve their credit by dedicating themselves to paying off debts, budgeting finances and ensuring that payments are made on time every month.

Advantage CCS is available to provide non-profit credit counseling services for anyone who has had debt and credit problems. Consumers are often confused about how to start improving credit and get finances under control, but a credit counseling service gives consumers the opportunity to have their specific situation examined so advice can be given.
