In the upcoming weeks, Wal-Mart will be making its prepaid card payment option available to consumers. While Wal-Mart’s new Bluebird card aims to reduce fees, offers a similar solution, but also offers rewards for its users.

A recent article from USA Today reveals that Wal-Mart is introducing a new pre-paid debit card option to its customers who want to avoid exhaustive bank and credit card fees. The article explains, “A new prepaid-type card the retailer will start issuing next week allows customers to complete many of the same transactions associated with typical bank accounts, such as bill pay and mobile access, but without many of the fees that prepaid and, more recently, checking-account customers are saddled with.” Noticing the increasing need for prepaid options, offers a unique program that rewards users for using a Prepaid MasterCard known as the “MonGo card.”

In the article, Daniel Eckert, vice president of financial services for Wal-Mart U.S., states, “[Wal-Mart's] new Bluebird card has no activation fee, no monthly or annual fee, no minimum balance requirement and will be replaced for free if you lose it.” However, the Bluebird card will have some fees.

The article adds, “Bluebird cardholders won't avoid all fees—customers who don't do direct deposit are charged $2 to withdraw money from an in-network ATM. Out-of-network ATM withdrawal also costs $2, in addition to whatever the ATM provider may charge.” In addition, the article notes that the Bluebird card requires a $5 set-up fee.

For those that are looking for a low-fee alternative to banking and credit card fees, also offers a diverse range of advantage to its prepaid cardholders. According to Bielawski, customers may enjoy advantages much more than those made available by the Bluebird card. “Although many consumers are sure to be attracted to the Bluebird card, rewards customers for choosing a prepaid option. For each dollar a consumer loads onto the Mongo prepaid card, the consumer earns a dollar that is redeemable at the company’s online Rewards Mall. With direct deposit and bill pay options, the MonGo card is sure to be a contender. Additionally,’s unique Rewards Mall allows users to spend up to 1,000 in Rewards Points a month while choosing from over 80,000 goods. Basically, in addition to low-fee benefits, our customers can also earn as they shop.”
