“Having this widely used operating system on Power opens new sets of applications for our Power.Org members to exploit, ” said Elmer Corbin, chairman, board of directors, for Power.org. ”Adding to the Power ecosystem and providing access to our members is a prime activity of Power.Org and I am glad to announce the addition of the key OS running on Power. “
Android continues to gain traction as a key operating system for digital media and networking appliances, making it an important OS for the embedded market, so Power.org and the Power Architecture Community members continue to invest in its optimization on this high-performance hardware platform. In 2009, Android 1.6 was ported on Freescale PowerQUICC processor and QorIQ P1022 processor as a result of collaboration with Mentor Graphics. In 2011, in collaboration between IBM and Mentor Graphics, Android 2.1 was ported on PowerPC 460. Thus, Android is available today on multiple Power Architecture based platforms. Supporting Android on PowerPC 460, QorIQ and PowerQUICC III processors, to Developers as Open Source Code, opens numerous industries and applications to Android deployment, including networking and network appliances, storage, printing and imaging, multimedia, and industrial control applications.
Demonstration of Android 2.3 on a Power platform will occur at the 2012 ASIA Power Architecture Conference. The event will take place on October 25, in Shanghai. For details, please visit http://www.power.org/events/2012-asia-power-architecture-conference/
