"They sat in a close circle and performed alone and with each other and what knocked me out was the intimacy. They weren’t performing for us, just playing for themselves," says Bill Berry.

Songwriter Bill Berry (Sons & Daughters – ABC TV) in association with the Lyric-Hyperion Theatre & Café in Silverlake (Los Angeles) presents Songwriter’s Square. Based on the in-the-round seating of venues like the Bluebird Café in Nashville, Songwriter’s Square offers a fresh take on the traditional singer/songwriter performance format. Four performers will be seated in the center of the floor with audience members surrounding them on multi-levels.

“One of the most amazing performances I’ve ever seen was at the Bluebird with Don Schlitz, Tom Schuyler and two other writers,” says Bill Berry, the show’s producer and host as well as one of the songwriters in the inaugural performance. “They sat in a close circle and performed alone and with each other and what knocked me out was the intimacy. They weren’t performing for us, just playing for themselves.”

Best known for its 99-seat theatre space, Silverlake’s Lyric-Hyperion Theatre & Café (located at the corner of Lyric and Hyperion) will be reconfigured for the Songwriter’s Square shows. “I’m inviting writers who know each other, know each other’s songs and have co-written songs,” says Berry. “Four performers, face-to-face, four different sides of songwriting. Hence, Songwriter’s Square.

Songwriter’ s Square takes place on the third Sunday of each month at 7:30 PM. The next performance will be this coming Sunday, October 21. The show premiered this past July 22 and subsequent third Sundays to sold-out audiences. Previous writers have included Tracy Newman (multiple award-winning songwriter, Emmy winning writer), Gary Stockdale (Bukowsical! , Penn & Teller: BULLSH*T), and Richard Goldman (Girls N’ Cows) and comic songwriter Eric Schwartz Berry plans to continue the series into the winter. “There’s no lack of great songwriters in Los Angeles,” he says. “It is a pleasure to present them to the peeps.”

The three writers for this coming Sunday joining host, Bill Berry are:

Brian Woodbury - composer & lyricist for stage, screen, band and concert hall. An album of his blue state country songs Town & Country with Rob Shapiro was released earlier this year.

Paul F. Perry - a member of the comedy/a cappella quartet The Blanks, a.k.a. "Ted's Band" from the hit sitcom "Scrubs." Paul received an Emmy nomination for his co-write “Guy Love” from the "Scrubs" episode "My Musical".

Shanna O'Brien – has recorded with members of the Steve Miller band, Huey Lewis and the News and the Tubes and opened for Journey "back in the day." She's toured the orient and had her own show at the MGM Grand in Reno.
