Sunderland, home to the Stadium of Light, the Penshaw Monument and the Elephant Tea Rooms, is also home to the nation's brainiest people according to (, the UK's largest quiz site, conducted a nationwide quiz of some of their most frequently incorrectly answered questions. In total there were thirty questions, five in each of the categories Sport, Geography & Nature, Art & Literature, Science & Technology, Lifestyle and History & Politics.

Questions included ‘How many points are scored for a converted try in Rugby Union?’, ‘What is the collective noun for a group of emus?’ and ‘Which is the smallest planet in the solar system?’.

The quiz was completed by over 5,000 UK residents, each naming their closest city. The results were analysed by calculating the greatest number of correct answers as a percentage of completed quizzes.

Sunderland scored 71% of correct answers, making them the lead city of the thirty that took part. Exeter was in second place with 68% and Preston third with 65%. Norwich was in last place, with just 35% of total answers being correct.

Further analysis of the results identified that hair colour does not have any effect on levels of intelligence, so contrary to popular opinion, blondes are definitely not dumb. In fact Blondes scored 54% correct answers, exactly the same as Black and Red haired people. Brunettes and Grey haired quiz entrants scored just slightly lower with 53%.

Rick Eastman at says, “We wanted to test the old theory that blondes are somehow not as clever as their darker haired mates. can prove that this is absolutely not the case; hair colour has no effect on a person's intelligence. Blondes gave just as many right answers as those with Black or Red hair. Brunettes in fact scored lower than blondes, but just by 1%.”
