Dog Ear Publishing releases “Looking Out for Evan” by G. Michael Shufelt.

(It's) a story of love and devotion, and of the decisions that are made and the strength that is displayed by family members and medical professionals in the face of impending loss.

Indianapolis (PRWEB) October 17, 2012

Author G. Michael Shufelt and his wife, Amy, were settling into life in an empty nest; their children had grown up and moved out of the house, and the couple was looking forward to a quieter future. When Amy learned of baby Evan and that he was in a children’s hospital only 60 miles from their home, she decided to visit him. As this new book details, this was the beginning of one of the most special relationships that Amy or Michael had ever experienced -- and of a journey into fragile family relationships and a complex medical world.

Evan was born with malformations of his digestive system that made it impossible for him to digest nutrition. While he received medical treatment that prolonged his life and lessened his suffering, the Shufelts openly opposed further medical treatment that they saw as extreme and experimental. Evan’s warm personality and natural charisma won over nurses and doctors. The Shufelts planned their days around trips to the hospital and involved themselves in his medical care. When Evan stayed at his grandmother’s home, they traveled the much greater distance to maintain their very special connection with this very special boy. About a year after meeting him, they lost the baby who had been the focus of their lives.

"Looking Out for Evan" is a story of love and devotion, and of the decisions that are made and the strength that is displayed by family members and medical professionals in the face of impending loss. Evan was a sweet little charmer, and the couple's devotion to him created a mutual sense of purpose that had been missing from their lives. Author G. Michael Shufelt lives in Pennsylvania with his wife, Amy, where he writes and teaches undergraduate mathematics part-time. This is his first book.
