Hudson Valley ENT offers 10 tips to help prevent sinus problems

The dropping leaves and temperatures are Mother Nature’s way to remind us that colder temperatures are on the way. The physicians at Hudson Valley Ear, Nose & Throat(ENT) have put together a quick checklist to help keep sinuses healthy and prevent sinusitis this winter.

□ Clean the heating system. Vents and radiators gather dust and mold spores during the off season.
□ Consider fitting the heating system with HEPA filters. HEPA filters help trap allergens and particles in the air.
□ Clean the chimney. Better ventilation means less sinus-irritating fireplace smoke gets into the house.
□ Vacuum and dust regularly. More time indoors means more exposure to household irritants such as dust and pet dander.
□ Keep pets clean. A bath at the beginning of winter can lessen dander.
□ Add moisture to the air. Use a humidifier to lessen sinus dryness indoors. Try to keep humidity between 35 and 50 percent, high enough to moisten the air but low enough to discourage mold and mildew.
□ Drink plenty of cold and warm fluids. Staying hydrated in general helps keep sinuses moist and the steam from a cup of tea, coffee, or soup gives sinuses a quick blast of soothing moisture.
□ Moisturize sinuses. Over-the-counter saline sprays or irrigation systems help clear out allergens while preventing dryness. An added benefit – moist sinuses are better able to protect against cold, flu and other viruses.
□ Wash hands often. Dry sinuses and sinus infections often follow colds, so preventing the spread of germs can protect sinuses.
