Chicago, Illinois (PRWEB) October 18, 2012
Federal agents announced the indictment of 91 people involved in $429 million in false health bills, including two doctors from the Chicago area according to the Chicago Tribune. The indictments were spurred by a strike force created to investigate Medicare fraud, and attorneys working with the website Chicago Injury Attorneys say that many patients could be entitled to file malpractice claims.
“Many of the indictments on this list have to do with billing between doctors and Medicare or insurance companies,” said Karla Bradford, a spokesperson for the group, which was created to help victims of accidents and malpractice find lawyers to assist them, “But payments issued by insurers can affect the insured, and the overall medical expertise of these doctors should also be questioned.”
The doctors in question are Sharon Rinaldi, a psychologist who allegedly claimed to provide services to patients who were dead and submitted claims for more than 24 hours of work in a single day; and Robert Kolbusz, a dermatologist who stands accused of falsely diagnosing patients and submitting bills for falsely documented treatments.
Bradford says the group is particularly concerned about actions like those of Dr. Kolbusz's.
“When a doctor fudges treatments or diagnoses in order to maximize the money he's making, it doesn't just affect the insurance company. By necessity it also affects the patient and what they understand about their injury or condition. It can even be dangerous.”
To patients of the indicted doctors, Bradford recommends talking to an attorney immediately.
“There is compensation available to victims of this kind of crime,” she said. “Even if you don't feel you were directly affected, find out what your legal options are.”
