Los Angeles based vocal coach, Per Bristow’s TheSingingZone.com, the home of his popular voice training program, Sing with Freedom has released a new video interview entitled “How Singer Improves His Voice and Heals Voice Problem.” In the video, Bristow interviews a young singer, Feliz, who experienced severe vocal problems after singing with an already existing problem and how he went about healing that problem.
Many people experience vocal hoarseness, vocal fatigue, even serious vocal dysfunctions, and not just professional singers. The question is how to handle not only the situation should it occur, but also to prevent the problem from even beginning. In the video, Felix describes how he had been experiencing severe allergies and opted to continue singing. Shortly thereafter his voice completely shut down and proceeded to visit doctor after doctor who handed him many different diagnoses - none of which looked good. Not only did Felix not give up on his quest, he began to search beyond what the doctors had been telling him.
“Felix was wise to look beyond just what doctors were telling him,” says Bristow, “as really the problem began a long time ago. It is crucial for a singer to develop effective vocal techniques to prevent these problems.”
The story goes beyond simply the cautionary tale of what Felix should have done to avoid getting into this extreme situation. The problems continued for four years, no singing or speaking. Eventually Felix, as the interview details, applied Bristow’s methods, which are based in building kinesthetic awareness in order to feel precisely where the problem is within the voice and body. The story detailed is remarkable as Felix continues on to describe how significantly his voice improved within just two weeks: “weight dropped off, no pulling down and sang straight for three hours.”
Bristow states, “What happens so often is we not only have the physical dysfunction, but we develop a deep fear associated with the problem. This only serves to create more tension, and in many ways, tension that is harder for people to put aside.”
It is understandable that someone would develop a fear around singing giving everything this young singer has gone through. It is apparent that Bristow’s work goes beyond just being a vocal coach and helping singers learn how to sing better and veers into the world of life coaching and is clear how skilled he really is at this. He has helped this one person remove the tension that comes from holding on to fear and that certainly goes a long way in learning how to heal a physical problem. Bristow’s philosophy is that a problem is healed by developing greater awareness and advanced knowledge of how to deal with the problem and then follow through. If this video is any indicator, it is a sound philosophy.
