Baltimore, MD (PRWEB) October 18, 2012
Over 200 reported cases of fungal meningitis and several deaths have been reported among patients who have received contaminated steroid injections. Patients are being advised to talk to a doctor immediately if they received a spinal steroid injection between May 21, 2012 and September 28, 2012. The Law Offices of Peter Angelos, PC is committed to devoting substantial resources to investigating and prosecuting cases on behalf of the thousands of people who may have received a tainted steroid injection, and are at risk of developing meningitis, a serious and potentially fatal condition.
"People who have had these injections need to pay strict attention to any symptoms they develop and seek immediate medical attention,” said Patricia Kasputys of the Law Offices of Peter Angelos. “We are dealing with a very serious condition."
According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the injections from the New England Compounding Center (NECC) are the source of the outbreak. NECC produced and shipped the steroid to 75 facilities in 23 different states; seven Maryland facilities received the steroid.
"The clients we are working with have been seriously damaged, said Kasputys. “Some have suffered greatly with various symptoms and all are fearful of what may develop." Symptoms may include severe headache; fever; neck stiffness; seizures, and sensitivity to light.
Kasputys continued, saying, “It is tragic that many patients who have received steroid injections are potentially at risk of stroke or fungal meningitis, which can be fatal, and that NECC, a compounding pharmacy, has been operating without federal oversight and compliance with rules and regulations designed to protect consumers."

The firm tried a groundwater contamination case in which the jury awarded $496 million in compensatory damages and over $1 billion in punitive damages in favor of hundreds of plaintiffs against Exxon Corporation, the highest punitive damages amount ever awarded by a jury in Maryland. Allison, et al. v. Exxon Mobil Corporation, Case No. 03-C-003809, Cir. Ct. Baltimore County, MD. In addition, the firm represented the State of Maryland in a lawsuit against the tobacco industry and achieved a settlement of over $4 billion, one of the highest awards in the U.S. State of Maryland v. Philip Morris, Inc., Case No. 96122201/CL211487, Cir. Ct. for Baltimore City.
