Stevens Researchers Develop Cognitive Radio Based Dynamic Spectrum Access Wireless Communications
Dynamic Spectrum, LLC, a new start-up commercializing cognitive radio technology from Stevens Institute of Technology, has been awarded a $150,000 grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) program. The grant gives a boost to Stevens’ efforts to commercialize academic research and development.
Dynamic Spectrum is building on a comprehensive Stevens solution, funded by the National Science Foundation and National Institute of Justice, for cognition-enabled dynamic spectrum access (DSA) wireless communications which allows intelligent, efficient and secure access to underutilized parts of the radio spectrum or spectrum white spaces. It has the potential to transform the multi-billion dollar global telecommunications market, leading to more efficient cellular networks, interoperable wireless public safety communications, low cost rural broadband connectivity, and infrastructure for robust mobile video applications.
The Dynamic Spectrum team consists of the inventors R. Chandramouli and K.P. Subbalakshmi, Stevens professors from the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, with Dr. Vijay P. Kumar as the CEO. Kumar led networking research at Bell Labs for more than 20 years and brought products such as the ATLANTA ATM chip set and PacketStar gigabit router from the research lab to the marketplace. They formed Dynamic Spectrum under the auspices of the Stevens Office of Academic Entrepreneurship (OAE), a pioneer in taking academic research to market.
“These researchers have distinguished themselves as pioneers in the wireless radio communications arena,” said Stevens Associate Provost Christos Christodoulatos. “We are proud to support their efforts to make more efficient use of the radio spectrum.”
"Our technology will enable smart, opportunistic access to spectrum from any mobile device," said Chandramouli.
"Security concerns will be addressed as an integral part of our design process," said Subbalakshmi.
“The worldwide shortage in spectrum, the policies from regulatory bodies favoring shared spectrum access, and the development of relevant standards make the moment right to exploit DSA technology. We will bring a new generation of wireless communication products to commercial and military networks,” said Kumar.
Chandramouli, Subbalaskshmi and Kumar are partnering with the Brookline Police Department in Massachusetts to pilot test their technology.
“We are excited about this new technology and look forward to working with the Stevens researchers and Dynamic Spectrum in the development of their cognitive radio system. The Town of Brookline’s WIFI mesh network, utilizing the 4.9 and 2.4 GHz spectrum is a great real world environment to test and enhance this new groundbreaking technology,” said Officer Scott Wilder, director of technology and communication for the Brookline Police Department.
