Last week, National Midwifery Week celebrated midwives and midwifery practice across the nation. Created by the American College of Nurse-Midwives (ACNM) to support and recognize their members, National Midwifery Week seeks to raise public awareness with the theme, “Our Moment of Truth™: A New Understanding of Midwifery Care.”
Intended as an educational campaign, National Midwifery Week’s goal is to bring together women, families, and midwives by empowering women to make informed decisions about their health. The recent Presidential election campaign and the historic passing of the Affordable Care Act have brought women’s health to the forefront as not only a health issue but an economic one as well. Under the Affordable Care Act, women now have access to co-pay-free birth control and preventative health care services, including well-woman visits and mammograms. Such access has the potential to affect both economic and educational opportunities for women.
Jones & Bartlett Learning recently published Clinical Practice Guidelines for Midwifery & Women's Health, Fourth Edition by Nell L. Tharpe, Cindy Farley, and Robin G. Jordan, a trusted quick reference guide to midwifery and well-woman care. Completely updated and revised, this new edition reflects the rapidly changing clinical environment. It addresses documentation and risk management to aid in decision-making and appropriate document care. Convenient and easy-to-use, this new edition encompasses traditional, empirical, and evidenced-based practice to meet the needs of a broad range of new and experienced practitioners and patients. Clinical Practice Guidelines for Midwifery & Women's Health, Fourth Edition meets the recommendations of the American College of Nurse–Midwives (ACNM) and the Midwives Alliance of North America (MANA) for written policies and/or practice guidelines and reflects current and emerging midwifery and women’s health practice. Earlier this year, Women’s Gynecologic Health, Second Edition by Kerri Durnell Schuiling and Frances E. Likis from Jones & Bartlett Learning was awarded the Book of the Year Award from the American College of Nurse-Midwives (ACNM). Presented at the ACNM 57th Annual Meeting & Exposition in Long Beach, CA, the award recognized the year’s best research and scholarship in midwifery and women’s health.
According to ACNM Senior Policy Advisor Eileen Ehudin Beard, CNM, FNP, the text, “…provides a plethora of excellent up-to-date information on many aspects of women’s health with an emphasis on a holistic approach to care. One of the many things that make this text special is that it has a feminist approach to health care. This is exemplified by the illustrations which show the woman as whole rather than just ‘body parts.’ The second edition has some wonderful revisions that include new chapters on the care of lesbian, transgender and bisexual women, care of women during the first trimester of pregnancy as well as the care of women who have had gastric bypass surgery.”
Women’s Gynecologic Health, Second Edition is a comprehensive text that equips students and practicing clinicians with a strong foundation in women’s gynecologic health, including health promotion, maintenance, and treatment. Based on the most recent research, it provides authoritative content written from a feminist perspective to convey a holistic approach to care.
“Francie and I were deeply honored to receive the ACNM Book of the Year Award for our second edition of Women’s Gynecologic Health,” said author, Kerri Durnell Schuiling. “We produced this book because we believed that there needed to be a book that presented women’s gynecologic health from a feminist and holistic viewpoint. We strove to emphasize the importance of respecting the normalcy of female physiology while at the same time providing medical content appropriate for assessment, diagnosis and treatment of pathology. Receiving this award a second time is therefore particularly meaningful because for us, it affirms that our colleagues also believe in the importance of treating women from a holistic perspective and respecting each woman as an authoritative knower.”
Completely updated and revised, the second edition includes four new chapters on diagnosis of pregnancy at the gynecologic visit, women’s health after bariatric surgery, sexual assault, and urinary tract infections. In addition, the chapter on gynecologic health care for sexual and gender minorities has been expanded to include care not only for lesbians, but also for women who are bisexual or transgender.
