If I want to keep my clients I need to be able to offer options, and one of those options has to be contracting services.

Dave Sgro, President of True North Consultants, Inc., recently spoke on a panel at the 2012 Chicago Fall Conference Two Day Workshop: A Years Worth of Talent Source Solutions held by Top Echelon® Network.

At the conference, Sgro shared his knowledge and expertise on how hiring is changing in corporate America. He told attendees that companies are committed to a mix of direct hire and contract workers. This is not a short-term solution but rather part of the long-term business strategies that are being implemented in all industries. He is experiencing this in his day-to-day business as he talks with companies who have staffing problems that need to be solved.

“I try to bring it up in most conversations,” Sgro said. “When I am taking a direct job order, I often ask if they would want a contractor to fill the void and at least handle the burden of the day-to-day tasks until we find the perfect direct hire candidate.”

Like many companies in today’s economy, a growing number of Sgro’s clients are already utilizing blended workforces that incorporate both traditional employees and contractors. Because they know that he can handle all of their staffing needs, including contracting, they automatically come to him when they need a contractor.

“Some of the clients have special projects that need to be completed,” he said. “Other clients have budget restraints and can’t pay a recruiting fee, so they utilize a contractor and simply pay a monthly invoice. And others just like the fact that it is a lower risk hire. There are instances where you simply cannot tell if the candidate is going to work out long-term until they are there in the job. The contract-to-hire route helps eliminate some of that risk. If I want to keep my clients I need to be able to offer options, and one of those options has to be contracting services.”

Sgro utilizes the contract staffing back-office services of Top Echelon® Contracting (TEC). Since 1999, TEC President Debbie Fledderjohann has worked with him on 63 contract placements. Sgro’s firm functions as the front-office and deals directly with matching the candidate to the job order. As the "back-office," Fledderjohann's company becomes the legal Employer of Record for the contractors, handling all the financial, legal, and administrative tasks.
