Newtown, PA (PRWEB) October 22, 2012
George School, an IB school located in Newtown, PA is opening a new exhibit on Wednesday October 31st, 2012 for local photographer and book artist Eric Kunsman in the Class of 1956 Gallery at the Mollie Dodd Anderson Library. The exhibit titled, “Thou Art…,Will Give…” will run from October 31st to December 20th 2012, and is a compilation of photos that were taken at Eastern State Penitentiary in Philadelphia, PA.
A former American prison in Philadelphia, PA, Eastern State Penitentiary was a prison that emphasized principles of reform as opposed to punishment when it came to how the inmates were treated. Mr. Kunsman first visited the penitentiary three years ago while he was on a class trip with his students from Mercer County Community College. During his first visit, Kunsman quickly realized that what he heard about the site’s architecture was true, but it wasn’t until his second visit as a student that he noticed just how engaging the history of the penitentiary truly was.
When the exhibit opens on Wednesday October 31st, this PA prep school will give viewers the chance to see startling photographs of images and text in which Kunsman shares the sense of loneliness, hopelessness, and the desperate search for salvation that many of the inmates felt as they served out their time in the penitentiary. His photographs will also give viewers the chance to ponder the reasons why so many of their spirits are, or may still be trapped within the walls of the penitentiary.
For those who are interested in seeing the exhibit and want to have the chance to talk with Mr. Kunsman about his work, on November 1st, 2012 at 3:00 pm, George School will be hosting a gallery talk and reception.
