Rottenstein Law Group Helping to Publicize New Research Showing Use of SSRI Antidepressants Increases Risk of Hemorrhagic Strokes

The Rottenstein Law Group, which represents clients with claims stemming from injuries allegedly caused by drugs in the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) class of antidepressants, is helping to make the public aware of the results of a recent study finding that use of SSRIs might confer a small but statistically significant risk of brain hemorrhage.

Researchers at Western University in Ontario, Canada, recently “pooled the findings from 16 past studies involving more than 500,000 people who were on SSRIs or not,” according to an October 17, 2012, article in the Chicago Tribune. Upon examining that data from those studies, the researchers found that, “overall, antidepressant users were about 40 to 50 percent more likely to suffer bleeding in or around the brain.” Based on these figures, “there would be one brain hemorrhage for every 10,000 people using an SSRI over one year,” the Chicago Tribune reports.

The study’s authors emphasized that “people who are already at increased risk of a brain hemorrhage may need to be careful. That includes people who've had a brain bleed in the past, or are on medications that reduce blood clotting such as warfarin (Coumadin), or a combination of aspirin and clopidogrel (Plavix).” Indeed, in it’s article on the study, the web site MedPageToday.com specified that “a separate analysis showed that concomitant use of an SSRI and an anticoagulant significantly increased the risk of brain hemorrhage compared with anticoagulant use alone.”

The Rottenstein Law Group urges anyone who thinks they or a loved one may have suffered a stroke or some other injury from SSRIs to speak to a qualified personal injury lawyer. The firm’s Zoloft Lawsuit Center, at http://www.zoloftlawsuitcenter.net contains social media features that allow for easy sharing on sites like Facebook and Twitter, thereby enabling visitors to spread the word about Zoloft’s potential dangers.
