Bel Marra Health, well known for offering high-quality, specially formulated vitamins and nutritional supplements, supports recent report that shows the activity of lycopene in the body may be associated with certain biomarkers that are associated with disease development and progression.
According to a recent report published in the journal Acta Biochimica Polonica, the activity of lycopene in the body may be associated with certain biomarkers that are associated with disease development and progression. Lycopene metabolites pertain to molecular products that are generated from the metabolism of the initially larger lycopene molecule. In the case of our daily diets, the lycopene present in tomatoes are thus converted to lycopene metabolites or lycopenoids, which are smaller in size and can easily be transported across the rest of the body for absorption and assimilation.
The report discussed the lycopenoids derived from tomatoes present in regular diets interact with particular cell surface receptors is a dose-dependent manner. For example, the lycopenoid apo-12’-lycopenoic acid, which is a lycopene metabolite, binds to protein receptors in the cells of the prostate gland, inhibiting its chances of undergoing abnormal, uncontrolled cell division. Studies have shown that the introduction of this lycopene metabolite can regulate the cell cycle and possibly prevent the development of prostate cancer.
Lycopene metabolites from tomatoes and other fruits and vegetables have also been shown to improve cell-to-cell communication, which is a biological phenomenon that allows cells to send messages regarding specific activities such as cell division and migration. In cancer, cell-to-cell communication is generally considered abnormal because the cells tend to work and move on their own, without the feedback regulation that normally occurs in a healthy body. Poor cell-to-cell communication may thus trigger uncontrolled cell division, which may result in the production of a tumor. Dysfunctional cell-to-cell communication may also result in unregulated cell migration, which is often regarded in cancer as metastasis.
Spokesperson for Bel Marra Health Dr. Victor Marchione says, “The integration of tomatoes in our daily diets may thus be beneficial to our health, especially when we consider that lycopene and its metabolites may regulate specific cellular and biochemical functions in the body. Lycopene metabolites derived from regular diets that include tomatoes are easily absorbed through the gastrointestinal lining and circulated in the blood.”
CEO of Bel Marra Health Jim Chiang says, “The observation that lycopene metabolites derived from fruits and vegetables such as tomatoes can accumulate in the body appears to be promising in terms of having a natural way of combating chronic diseases. Instead of regularly taking medications that may also impart certain side effects, eating tomatoes during regular diets may give us assurance that there is a safe and natural way of preventing disease and enhancing good health.”
