High school teacher on a mission to elevate science and math scores in the U.S. with easy-to-use 10-minute video lessons.

“Chem in 10” (http://www.chemin10.com), the online educational tool that teaches high school chemistry in 10-minute, easy-to-understand interactive video lessons, has launched a crowd-funding campaign on Indiegogo that is designed to support its goal of elevating the science and math test stores for high school students nationwide.

Founded by Cornell University Graduate and Public High School Science Teacher Melanie Fine, Chem in 10 is on a mission to address the shortcomings of U.S.-based public schools in science and math education (in 2009, a study found that U.S. high school students rank 25th among 34 countries in math and science subjects).

Having been challenged for many years with the task of teaching the hard sciences to low-income students who often lack the basic skills and resources needed to succeed, Fine decided to take matters into her own hands. With Chem in 10, she created a powerful new approach to learning the complexities of science – in a simplified way that is interactive and resonates with her students.

Chem in 10 allows students to master high school chemistry by watching 10-minute video lessons and then taking a brief online quiz to assess their understanding of the topic, before moving on to the next level. Video topics range from basic ideas like “The Atom” and “Matter” to more advanced concepts like “Balancing Chemical Equations,” “Thermochemistry” and “Kinetics.”

As a public school teacher on a limited salary, Fine recently decided to enlist the help of others through the Indiegogo fundraising campaign, with the hope that teachers, parents, corporations and anyone else who is passionate about science education in America, will get on board. With the appropriate funding in place, Chem in 10 will have the ability to swiftly reach more teachers, schools and students through enhanced technology and marketing, ultimately empowering a generation of kids who are in desperate need of new resources.

“The fact is that our students are suffering because our education system is severely lacking the resources needed to help them reach their full potential,” said Melanie Fine, founder of Chem in 10. “Chem in 10 offers hope for today’s high school students, by providing a refreshing new way of learning. With the proper funding in place, our program has a great possibility to generate substantial impact for our public school system nationwide.”

More than 100 students are currently using the Chem in 10 program to gain a competitive edge and on average, these students are already experiencing more than a 10 percent increase on their test scores. These students, many of whom have parents who never attended high school, are now on the threshold of exciting futures in the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) fields – and are on a steady path toward attending college, which may not have been possible before.

“What was previously a ‘necessary evil’ of high school has become an engaging and challenging experience for students,” continued Fine. “I am actually seeing more and more students enthusiastically signing up for higher-level science classes and aspiring to science-based careers after succeeding with the Chem in 10 program.”

Chem in 10 offers FREE access to a database of more than 100 video lessons and quizzes for teachers and students by signing up at http://www.Chemin10.com. For students who require additional help, Chem in 10 also offers enhanced monthly membership options that include a variety of services such as on-call support, access to a weekly online “live classroom” and one-on-one private coaching.
