San Francisco, CA (PRWEB) October 22, 2012

GigaOM, a global technology media company, today announced additional speakers and topics for its annual GigaOM RoadMap 2012 conference, taking place November 5 in San Francisco. In its second year, RoadMap will explore the future of connected technology and reveal how design and user interface are the keys to finding meaning in a connected lifestyle.

For all the benefits of connectedness, always-on technology has created a world of increasing complexity. But the rise of design as a force of innovation brings a more human-centered perspective to technology. Thought leaders of technology and design will take the stage at RoadMap to examine how great design can humanize technology and streamline the connected experience.

Highlights include rare interviews with:

  • Ben Silbermann, CEO, Pinterest
  • Perry Chen, CEO, Kickstarter
  • Stefan Olander, vice president, Digital Sport, NIKE

And inspiring talks from:

  • Oren Jacob, CEO, ToyTalk
  • John Maeda, president, Rhode Island School of Design
  • Jennifer Pahlka, founder and executive director, Code for America

"The best designers consider how people use technology and how it’s integrated into everyday life,” said Om Malik, founder and senior writer for GigaOM. “The marriage of design and technology is about providing a simple and integrated experience.”

Topics to be covered include:

  • Designing for the senses: With voice and gesture interfaces moving out of science fiction and into gaming devices and mobile phones, UX is no longer just about visual design. It must address all the senses, and that is a challenging new frontier.
  • The balance of art and data: The web is over-designed for data, by data. Every click can be tracked to optimize site content, but some of the beauty is lost in the process. In a more balanced approach, the designer's imagination guides the process, but the ideas are backed up by data and continually tested and optimized.
  • The role of beauty: Wearables are a new frontier in beautiful design, but they have to be objects of desire. When functional value is layered on a beautiful object, it becomes not just practical, but magical.

Attendees will receive an exclusive, limited-run book compiled by GigaOM editors that features interviews and essays with leading thinkers on connected design and user experience. It includes excerpts from Pandora CTO Tom Conrad, Flipboard CEO Mike McCue, and designer Christian Lindholm sharing their thoughts on the relationship between great design and connected living. A limited number of tickets are available. Follow GigaOM RoadMap on Twitter (@GigaOM / #RoadMapConf) to stay up to date as new speakers and sessions are announced.
