Breast implants have remained a staple of the cosmetic surgery world for many years, but now more individuals are pursuing gluteal augmentation. According to a recent article from Cosmetic Surgery Times, “Patients appear to be more satisfied with buttock augmentation with implants compared to fat grafting, according to results of a recent study.” Dr. Robert Rho, a plastic surgeon who specializes in a wide variety of procedures, is not surprised by this trend, noting his improved experience with silicone implants over fat transfer techniques.
According to the article the study observed the post-operative experiences of 129 patients who had undergone some form of buttock augmentation between 2008 and 2011. Comparatively, implants proved the most favorable among the subjects, with 96 patients pursuing silicone prosthesis and only 33 subjects undergoing fat transfers in conjunction with stem cell therapy. Furthermore, the researchers found that silicone implant patients were 76 percent satisfied with their results, while only 69.7 percent of patients who received fat transfers were satisfied. Each procedure is noted to carry a certain amount of risk, but according to Dr. Robert Rho, silicone implants are generally more effective.
Dr. Robert Rho comments, “It is no surprise that silicone transplants are more preferred over fat transfer procedures. I have helped many patients’ correct underdeveloped backsides through the use of silicone implants. Silicone implants are solid and are known to provide individuals with fuller buttocks, which can enable them to balance their proportions, as they can make other body areas appear slimmer.”
In terms of fat transfers, Dr. Robert Rho notes that the process can prove a difficult one. He explains that the process involves two surgical procedures—liposuction and fat injections. However, each patient is different and if the results do not develop as planned, a patient may require more procedures in the future, which can increase overall costs. Dr. Robert Rho explains, “Sometimes fat cells are unable to survive after injection, which means more time and resources towards making a more natural-looking buttock.”
Dr. Robert Rho explains that although butt implants are widely preferred, patients should still expect some pain and soreness after the procedure. The recovery typically involves an outpatient procedure in conjunction with wearing a compression for approximately three weeks following the procedure. Dr. Robert Rho encourages all patients considering buttock augmentation to consult with a trusted plastic surgeon to determine the best procedure for them.
