Rear axle pinion nuts play an integral role in keeping drivers and their passengers safe while a car is moving. If the rear axle pinion nut loosens, the axle could lock up without warning and cause the driver to lose control of the vehicle.
“Drivers who have been in a vehicle that failed to move where and when they wanted it to will know just how scary this can be,” said Miami injury lawyer Michael S. Steinger.
Government and Chrysler Group officials said there have been 15 reports of rear axle failure in Ram 1500 and Dodge Dakota trucks manufactured from July 1 to Nov. 30, 2009. Four failures resulted in loss of vehicle control. In one instance, a driver's truck hit a concrete barrier. A problem with a rear axle pinion nut was found to be the cause of the axle failure, reported ABC News.
“Losing control of a car or truck can be very dangerous. I have seen many accidents that were the result of some sort of vehicle malfunction or failure,” said Steinger. “Injuries and wrongful deaths that happen because of defective products must be prevented.”
Apparently, a lack of adhesive may cause the rear axle pinion nut to loosen. If this occurs, the axle could lock up, said ABC News.
As a result of the accidents, Chrysler Group LLC is recalling thousands of 2009 and 2010 Ram 1500 and Dodge Dakota trucks, reported ABC News. The company will notify owners of the recall in November.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the recall affected 44,300 trucks.
