Teaching spelling with the help of technology tools such as the iPad proved to be an effective and thoroughly entertaining method...
New York, NY (PRWEB) October 30, 2012
A collaborative study recently completed by researchers in New Zealand, the United States, and Italy introduced the use of iPads in an effort to interest ASD (autism spectrum disorders) children in spelling. The study was successful, in that the children in the study were intrigued by the instructional video, and were then able to apply what they had learned: namely to use the spell-checker function on their iPads. Compared to traditional instructional methods, which only had a 40% success rate in getting the children to perform the spell-check tasks, after the participants watched the video, they could implement the instructions and complete the tasks at up to a 100% rate of success.
Even though the reason why there was such an astonishing improvement in correcting their own spelling is not clear, the researchers attribute interactivity and participation as two main reasons for the success. In other words, the children were expected to use the touch screen and thus remained interested in the task at hand since they were being active, and in addition they were allowed to select the types of activities they were using.
Marc Slater, managing director of Ultimate Spelling, applauded this type of research, commenting, “Technology is a gift whose potential we have yet to fully realize. Thanks to such research, we're getting more clarification as to how it can promote the teaching of children with learning difficulties and other disabilities.”
Teaching spelling with the help of technology tools such as the iPad proved to be an effective and thoroughly entertaining method, as the study illustrated. “More ways of implementing technology are encouraged if we are to facilitate language learning for everyone,” Slater commented.
More research needs to be conducted in order for academics and parents alike to fully understand how they can help children with ASD (autism spectrum disorders) to smoothly implement technology for improving the way they learn. To improve spelling it's important to recognize that while hard work, practice, and guidance are important in education, it's also important to integrate technology and interactivity to get as much benefit as possible out of any study program.
