The Chicago Tribune has endorsed Mike Nerheim, Republican candidate for Lake County State's Attorney, declaring, "We're more impressed with Nerheim. His seven-year stint as an assistant state's attorney and his extensive experience in criminal defense work make him the best choice to lead change."
"I recognize that the Tribune has taken a hard look at the office, so their recognition that the changes I propose and the experience I bring are the best hope for the future of the office is very gratifying," said Mike Nerheim in response to the endorsement news.
The Tribune endorsement comes two weeks before the election, and just a few days following the endorsement of another Chicago major newspaper, the Daily Herald. In their endorsement, the Herald editors also cited the advantage of his law experience. "...we believe Nerheim’s private practice experience as a criminal defense attorney gives him an edge in the turnaround. Going head-to-head against prosecutors daily on the types of felony cases at the root of the office’s problems provides a unique perspective."
Both major papers cited the advantages of Nerheim's plan for an Independent case review panel to address the wrongful conviction issue that has marked the office in recent years.
The Chicago Tribune editors explained, "Nerheim tells us he has recruited a panel of volunteer former prosecutors, judges and attorneys to review high-profile cases to prevent wrongful convictions. Kennedy, who served as an assistant state's attorney for four years, wants to form an in-house conviction integrity unit to prevent wrongful convictions. We think an independent outside a board of volunteers would be more effective. Nerheim is endorsed."
On the same issues, the Daily Herald editors concluded, " We like the independent nature of his case review concept. His criminal defense work includes juvenile misdemeanor, traffic and civil litigation. Kennedy’s work in private practice is mostly civil. We support Nerheim.”
"I am grateful for these very high-profile endorsements," added Nerheim in response to the endorsements. "Now it is up to the voters to select the next State's Attorney and I hope they will see that my experience, plans for change and record of integrity are the right choice to fight crime and ensure justice is served for all citizens of Lake County."
