Illinois Business Ready for Radon Action Week

Woods Basement Systems, Inc. is working with health agencies throughout the United States this week to promote Radon Action Week. The week begins Monday, October 15, and runs through Sunday, October 21, and is intended to raise awareness about the leading cause of lung cancer among non-smokers.

Radon is an odorless, colorless, radioactive gas that can seep into homes through cracks in the foundations, walls, crawl spaces and wells. The statistics show that it is a dangerous killer:

• Radon exposure causes more than 20,000 cases of lung cancer in the U.S. each year;
• One in 15 American homes contains dangerous levels of radon gas;
• Radon problems have been detected in homes in every county in the United States;
• Radon exposure killed more people last year than carbon monoxide, fires and handguns combined.

It is essential that homeowners, schools, daycare centers, and other businesses test for radon in their buildings. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) considers 4 picocuries per liter of air unacceptable.

Radon Action Week is a great time to test for radon, since the cooler weather means the home can be closed to outside air.
