On the first weekend in September, you’ll usually find Joe and Alice Robison making last-minute preparations for Opening Day at Scott Field, home of the Mississippi State Bulldogs football team. For more than a decade, it’s been a ritual: packing up the essentials, hitting the road for the 150-mile trip from their home in Laurel to Starkville, and upon arrival, settling in for a weekend of food, fun, and football with their fellow MSU fans.
This year, however, found them nearly 2,000 miles to the north, touring the scenic forests and coastal landscapes of New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. “We came up here on a cruise once, a few years back,” Joe said. “But this is our first chance to get inland and see the country in style.”
That’s Liberty Coach style, of course. The Robisons’ trek to Canada’s Maritime Provinces was their first extended trip in their new Liberty Coach, a 2012 Elegant Lady that they picked up back in May from the Stuart, Florida dealership. It is the second Liberty they’ve owned, and fifth coach overall, since they started RV-ing back in 1999.
“We started out with a Country Coach I bought as a repo,” Joe recalled. “I wanted to make sure we really liked the coach lifestyle before making a really serious investment. Of course, it grew on us as time went on, and the more time we spent out on the road, and got to know people who’ve been doing this for a long time, the more we came to understand what makes a good coach – and what makes Liberty Coach the best coach on the road.”
And that, he went on to explain, has as much to do with the people who stand behind the product as the product itself. “Liberty is a family business in the best sense of the word,” Joe reflected. “You know just by talking to Frank (Konigsteder, Liberty V.P. and co-owner) how much he cares about every customer. And once you become a coach owner, you feel like you’re part of the family. They take your satisfaction very personally.”
That’s something that’s becoming increasingly important to Joe today, as he and Alice are spending more and more time out on the road since his retirement in 2008.
Case in the point was their Canadian trip , which took them away from home for 8 weeks and nearly 5,000 miles. Knowing the chances of your conversion bus breaking down are more remote than any destination on the map is comforting. Knowing that Liberty’s legendary service is always just a phone call away is even more so.
“We only take a long trip like this one every two years or so,” Joe said. “But from fall through the spring, it seems like we’re almost always up in Starkville with the Bulldogs.”
More specifically, that would be the Rolling Bulldogs, a group of MSU friends and alumni owners whose intense loyalty to Mississippi State football, basketball and baseball is rivaled only by their passion for the RV lifestyle they also share. Their dedication led the group to build an RV park on a parcel of land adjacent to campus, just a stone’s throw from the stadium – the Rolling Bulldogs’ very own “home field.”
“We try to make every home football game, conference basketball game, and home baseball series,” Joe said. “So this is the first time in quite awhile that we’ll miss three in a row. But when the games start getting important, you know we’ll be there.”
And so they have, making every game since returning from Canada in early October. With Mississippi State off to a 7-0 start – their best since 1999 – every game is crucial from here on out, none moreso than this Saturday night’s matchup against No. 1- ranked and SEC archrival Alabama.
The game is in Tuscaloosa this year, which is actually a few miles closer to the Robisons’ home than Starkville. Which makes it a perfect away game to attend ... and a perfect illustration of why Joe Robison loves the Liberty Coach lifestyle.
“It’s a road game on the schedule, but when you’re in a Liberty Coach, every game’s a home game,” he laughs. “The only thing that could make it any better would be a Bulldog win.”
