The term “paying it forward” refers to an individual’s ability to make a positive change in someone else’s life. Geoff Meyerkord, an attorney at Meyerkord & Meyerkord, LLC, donated 90 bicycle helmets to Cardinal Ritter College Prep (CRCP). The donation was intended to improve bicycle safety conditions for children who would otherwise not own safety helmets. As a personal injury attorney, Attorney Meyerkord understands the serious nature and severe consequences of traumatic head injuries. According to the Bicycle Helmet Safety Institute, hundreds of cyclists are killed in bicycle accidents every year. About 70% of the people killed do not wear helmets. An alumni parent of the school – Judge Jimmie Edwards – connected Attorney Meyerkord with CRCP.
The donation included informational bicycle safety brochures as well. After receiving the helmets, CRCP decided to disperse them to the following archdiocesan feeder schools: St. Louis Catholic Academy, Most Holy Trinity and Cathedral Grade School. Attorney Meyerkord hopes that the donation will make the world a more fun and safer place for young children. With helmets, children can ride bicycles with an added measure of safety. According to data provided by New York City, almost 75% of bicycle accidents in NYC involved head injuries. Although New York does not statistically account for all accidents across the United States, New York City indicates that the number of bicyclist in the city exceeds the national average.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 700 people are killed in bicycle-related injures every year. Additionally, more than 500,000 people are treated at emergency rooms across the nation for bicycle-related injuries. Geoff Meyerkord is a personal injury attorney at Meyerkord & Meyerkord, LLC.
