Mclean, VA (PRWEB) October 25, 2012
Jim McHugh, Vice President of Capabilities & Services at NuWave Solutions presented at the GEOINT 2012 Symposium held October 8-11 in Orlando Florida. His presentation entitled “The Geospatial Data Challenge – Too Much Data / Too Little Information” focused on how to combine data warehousing and the latest business analytics tools to turn data into actionable information.
“Today’s geospatial data challenge comes not from too little information but from too much. The amount of data to be processed (volume), the speed at which the data changes (velocity) and the number of inputs and types of data (variety) which are collected and need to be processed into information for the knowledge worker often obscures the valuable information contained in the data. These gaps in information increase the strain on the knowledge workers and decision makers,” said McHugh.
According to McHugh, the increase of the three Vs of data (volume, velocity and variety), combined with the enormous size of the image and video files, is causing an immense strain across the intelligence community. More data should make us smarter by allowing us to make better decisions and/or predictions in less time. The challenge, which needs to be addressed today, is how to ingest the deluge of data from advanced satellite, aerial and video imagery, terrestrial LiDAR, network sensors, et al., process this data in a reasonably short amount of time, turning that data into actionable information presented to the knowledge worker and/or the decision maker at the right time and in the correct format.
Jim’s presentation concludes with a description of an innovative three tier architecture (Data, Analytics, and Production) to solve today’s intelligence community performance, data integration and data dissemination challenges.
