Rochester Optical is proud to announce our participation in the American Optometric Association’s (AOA) InfantSee program that offers free eye exams for infants. The InfantSEE program checks a child’s vision, refractive status, binocular (eye teaming) coordination, eye movement and focusing skills, peripheral awareness, and eye health. According to the American Optometric Association’s 2008 American Eye-Q® survey, 97 percent of mothers of children younger than 2 years of age say they do everything they can to ensure their children’s health, but only 13 percent of them say their babies have seen an eye and vision care professional for a regular check-up or well-care visit.
“I recommend and strongly encourage every infant to have an eye exam between 6-12 months.” Dr. Vadim Guy, an optometrist at Rochester Optical’s Greece location says. “Children should also have an eye exam at 3 years old and prior to entering school at 5 years of age.”
Children with risk factors should have their eyes examined more frequently. The AOA says those risk factors include a family history of vision problems, premature birth, and infection during pregnancy among other factors.
