Which one had the funniest punch line? The best zinger? The perfect come back? Presidential debates aside, the finalists in eTalentShowcase’s Top Comic contest ran a close race. In the end, voters declared Steve Hofstetter their favorite stand-up.
Other fan favorites in the national contest—which attracted thousands of entrants—included, Jay Montepare, Otto and George and Laura Park. The contest, which kicked off with an open call for all up-and-coming stand-ups to submit a clip, narrowed the finalist to 14 and then let fans select their Top Comic. It’s always all about the fans, said Mr. Hofstetter, who also co-owns several comedy clubs. “I love my fans. They are why I'm able to do this,” he said. “Without them, I'd still do this, but it'd be a great deal more pathetic.”
As expected, Mr. Hofstetter’s reaction to the win was as witty as his onstage bits. “Every comedian believes they deserve to win everything,” he said. “And every comedian is shocked if they do. It's the combination of high confidence and low self-esteem that keeps us going.” Mr. Hofstetter seems to be enjoying his bragging rights. “I had a lot of good friends in this contest, and I am happy to have smoked them all. Eat it, wonderfully talented comedians!”
“This contest was a nail biter,” says Ed Olimpio, vice president of eTalentShowcase. “Everyday someone else was in the lead. I think that speaks to the caliber of these comedians—they are incredibly gifted.” Comedy fans can check out the winning clip at etalentshowcase.com.
