On October 29, Colle Farmers Market responds to an article published by All Ghana News which discusses how Executive Director of ABOFAP, Nana Kwao Adam, stated during a Sunyani Press Conference that the Ministry of Food and Agriculture’s policy document did not give clear direction for their organic farming development .
According to All Ghana News, Nana Adam, “emphasised the need for a policy that would provide adequate support for promoting and developing the organic farming with the government playing a facilitation role by setting up a development fund to strengthen the sector.” The article states that Nana Adam expressed his concerns during the press conference that reports of food poisoning were caused by the misapplication of chemicals and chemical residues. “Ghana could develop its organic agriculture with consistent policy framework,” comments Nana Adam.
Farmers within the municipality had shown interest in organic farming policies for its “international marketing opportunities” reports All Ghana News. According to the article, Mr. Gabriel Gbiel Benarkuu, Business Service Provider for ABOFAP, “stressed the need for MOFA and the private organic food certifying bodies to form alliance to develop organic farming businesses as a means to create wealth and ensure food security and sovereignty.”
With no agricultural education or policies, reports the All Ghana News, the sector has failed in all organic farming applications. The article states that with the organic farming sector failing, unsafe food production and loss of capital are affecting the Municipality.
Colle Farmers Market feels that the demand in Ghana for more education in organic farming shows that the organic movement is truly international and has reached every corner of the globe. They commend the farmers of Ghana for their commitment to organic agriculture and supports government policy that will make that dream a reality. They call on all people everywhere to educate themselves about organic farming and look forward to the day we can all eat organic.
