Not many people realise that Halloween was invented in Ireland, not in America, and even fewer probably know that the traditional German festival used to be known as Turnip Ghosts. These are just two of the fascinating facts unearthed by travel insurance experts Direct Travel, who are celebrating all things spooky with a fantastic Halloween Prize Draw.

  •     Migrants crossing the Atlantic to escape the Irish Potato Famine in the 1840s took the idea of a Halloween festival around 31 October to the U.S.
  •     The first reference to trick or treating came in 1911 when a Canadian newspaper reported children in disguise asking for nuts and candies.
  •     Ireland's traditional cake for Halloween is fruit bread called Barmbrack.
  •     In Japan children enjoy snacks with a Halloween theme such as pumpkin soup-flavoured corn puffs.
  •     The whole idea of Halloween and trick or treating is lost on most people in Italy, where the concept has never caught on.
  •     A Hong Kong custom of warding off the spirits of the dead with gifts is called Yue Lan (Festival of the Hungry Ghosts), while German traditions included Rübengeistern (Turnip Ghosts) before Halloween grew in popularity in the 1990s.
  •     The Spanish name for Halloween in Noche de Brujas, meaning Night of the Witches.
