If a school fails to protect a child, an incident can lead to long-term traumatic consequences.
Miami, FL (PRWEB) October 24, 2012
A teacher at Treasure Coast High School in Florida was arrested. He was arrested into the St. Lucie County Jail on counts of sexual activity with a minor, case number 2012CF003095 State of Florida Vs. Dominic L. Madison (562012CF003095A). The alleged charges against Dominic L. Madison involved two girls under the age of 18, said WPBF News. Each survivor will now have to undergo a healing process, and for each individual this is unique. For some, this will mean filing a sexual abuse lawsuit, said Miami injury attorney Michael S. Steinger, a founding partner of Steinger, Iscoe & Greene.
"When a parent or guardian places a child in a school, they place their trust in that school to keep their child safe. At the most basic level, schools must keep children safe from harm,” said Steinger. “We do not tolerate abuse of students by teachers.”
The 35-year-old high school teacher faces 39 counts of sexual activity with minors and one count of using a child in a sexual performance. The sexual performance charge relates to a recorded sexual encounter, reported WPBF.
According to a 2004 U.S. Department of Education report, nearly 9.6 percent of students are targets of educator sexual misconduct sometime during their school career.
“If a school fails to protect a child, an incident can lead to long-term traumatic consequences. What victims deserve is compensation for their physical and emotional injuries. Victims have rights and one way to get full and fair compensation is to work with someone who understands the legal process,” said Steinger.
