One of our key initiatives is ensuring that children in Bexar County have access to books both at school and at home. The book drive provides books they can keep; books that will help them develop confidence and proficiency with reading.

San Antonio, Texas (PRWEB) October 25, 2012

During the Summer, SAReads and Firstmark Credit Union called on San Antonians to donate books to the SAReads annual Book Drive, and the community response was overwhelming.

This year, organizers estimate that more than 80,000 books were dropped off in collection bins at Firstmark Credit Union branches, H-E-B Stores, San Antonio Public Library branches and Barnes & Noble. Volunteers at the SAReads Book Bank are now sorting the books by reading level and preparing them for distribution to schools, early childhood and adult learning centers, as well as area non-profit organizations.

“Once again we are inspired by the generosity of so many in our community and their shared commitment to addressing literacy challenges in San Antonio,” said Pamela Toman, Executive Director of Literacy of San Antonio which oversees the SAReads campaign. “One of our key initiatives is ensuring that children in Bexar County have access to books both at school and at home. The book drive provides books they can keep; books that will help them develop confidence and proficiency with reading.”

The SAReads Book Bank fills more than 2,000 square feet of donated space made available through the generosity of Firstmark Credit Union. Volunteers who man the bank include employees of the Credit Union, local members of Rotary International, and College of Education students from UTSA.

The annual book drive was started by Texas State Representative Joaquin Castro and has expanded under the collaborative SAReads campaign.
