Local Girl Claims a Lead Role in Hollywood

Does an actress have to wait to star in the role of a lifetime?

Playing the part of ‘Lulu’, a tragic clown at once fabulous and pathetic – Christina Myers stars in the L.A. premiere of Those Whom the Gods Love, directed and written by Olivia Lilley (CMU graduate). Her character enters the stage in Act I, fresh and fiery, like Penelope Cruz’s role in Vicky, Cristina, Barcelona, and by the end resembles the female version of Joker from Batman. She bravely loses herself in her character, as the audience is guided through amusing rounds of verbal sparring & competition between Lulu and her ex-lover/neighbor Darren. They will stop at nothing to win the affections of Darren’s internet girlfriend, Sonia, who is now visiting for the weekend.
Originally from New Orleans, LA, where she graduated from Isidore Newman High School in 2003, Christina produced the play herself under the production company KIDS TERRIBLES (http://www.kidsterribles.com) with the help of co-founder Dr. Gaëtan Bonhomme. She read Lilley’s quick-witted drama and knew it would make a great showing in Los Angeles. The play perfectly ties to its Los Angeles setting with its ironic subject matter of how L.A. shapes American culture, and how three individuals, Lulu, Darren, and Sonia, fall prey to its promised fantasies.

With a successful Kickstarter campaign, the production was well on its way. Her drive to create and not wait to be cast by another undoubtedly comes from her mother, NOLA’s very own city planner and architect, Angela O’Byrne of Perez Architects. When Angela sets her sights on a project, she makes it happen, and the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.

Inspired by her friend, Andrew Larimer’s daring productions at The Nola Project in New Orleans, Christina created an immersive theater experience for the audience: they arrive at a nearby restaurant, Eat.Drink.Americano, where a surfer dude shows up. His offbeat humor and style puts the audience on edge – should we really follow this “dude”? – he functions as a comic foil to the production itself. The performance takes place in a secret loft location in Downtown LA Arts District (the fastest developing community in America right now). The show is fun, fresh, and fearless in its sexual freedom! The audience says it’s “saucy”, “naughty”, “hilarious”, and “edgy”.

With a vision in mind, anything is possible. Christina Myers moved to Los Angeles this year where she signed with Swenson Williams Agency. She currently works with Landed Entertainment on their Korean/Canadian co-production of the film, Fade Out. She is starring in a Comedy Central Pilot (in post-production), performed in 2 plays this summer, and booked an AT&T commercial. After graduating from Columbia University in NY with a BA in film, Christina performed standup comedy, ensemble theater, and directed The Vagina Monologues to a crowd of 1500, standing ovation!

Those Whom the Gods Love runs through November 4th in Downtown LA.
