"Roll Models" Event at Sea World

We are a firm of partners, associates and employees committed to enhancing the quality of life of people in San Diego

San Diego, CA (PRWEB) October 25, 2012

In keeping with its commitment to community involvement and improvement, Troutman Sanders is sponsoring HeadNorth’s “Roll Models” program. The program gives youth under the age of 17 living with an injury or disability—who use a wheelchair for mobility—a peer-bonding experience by spending a day with an inspirational adult mentor. Its first event was in August, with others planned for the coming months.

“We are extremely grateful for Troutman Sanders’ ongoing support of our Roll Models program,” said Michelle Bart, Executive Director for Head North. “Without the firm’s backing and commitment to the populations we serve, our organization would not have been able to get this program off the ground, let alone plan for its future growth.” HeadNorth provides essential support and resources to individuals and families affected by a spinal cord injury while championing a cure for paralysis.

San Diego County has approximately 120 new spinal cord injuries each year. Many of these are the result of sports-related activities, vehicle accidents or injuries while in the line of duty, such as military or police service. The first-year average expenses for paraplegics start at $270,000. Quadriplegics can expect up to $478,000. Support to these individuals is greatly needed and organizations like Troutman Sanders are helping fill the void.

Participants in the inaugural Roll Model event, held in August of this year, met their mentors for the first time at SeaWorld. Together, the pairs participated in a day of behind the scenes experiences and programs, enjoying the park at the same time. Each one left overwhelmingly happy, inspired, and grateful to have had the chance to gain a new big brother or big sister who can relate to their physical disability.

"We are a firm of partners, associates and employees committed to enhancing the quality of life of people in San Diego,” said Mike Whitton, San Diego office Managing Partner of Troutman Sanders. “HeadNorth is a wonderful organization worthy of our support. We are inspired by the dedication of the organization and its volunteers toward easing the challenges of individuals with spinal cord injuries. We’re proud to help them achieve their mission.”
