Ragan Communication’s PRDaily.com reveals the selection of 171 finalists in 29 categories for its Digital PR & Social Media Awards 2012.

Choosing 29 winners is going to be painful, and fun.

Ragan Communications and PRDaily.com today announced the selection of 171 finalists in the inaugural Digital PR & Social Media Awards 2012 contest.

The winners of the 29 categories will be announced at a luncheon honoring all finalists at The Greenhouse, located in New York City’s SoHo district on January 24, 2013. Winners will receive a trophy memento of their victory and one free admission to any Ragan conference in 2012-2013, plus publication of a detailed analysis of their victory on PRDaily.com.

Michael Sebastian, editor of the world’s leading PR news website, PRDaily.com, commented, “The number of entries alone for a discipline that didn’t exist five years ago removes all doubt that digital PR and social media are here to stay. There can be no more debate.

“What impressed me and all the judges was the joy and freedom in individual creativity shown by all the entrants, not just the finalists. We’d no sooner stop marveling at some example of outrageous imagination in online PR than the next entry would outdo the one that had just stunned us. This happened again and again.”

“Choosing 29 winners is going to be painful, and fun.”

Mark Ragan, CEO of Ragan Communications, added, “We had more than 350 entries for an activity everybody was still learning three years ago. That’s a little hard to grasp. My mind boggles at the untapped power of digital PR and marketing.”

“I’m certain we’re going to have to find judges for virtual reality entries in the next two or three years, if not sooner. What’s next—hologram PR and marketing?”

Right now, Ragan’s mind is focused on more mundane matters: “We want to put on a fun, memorable show for our 171 finalists. We’re trying a different kind of PR awards lunch, one that moves fast and intelligently stimulates our audience with good ideas, variety and humor. So far, folks tell us they really appreciate our liveliness. We’re determined not to bore people.”
