On October 30, daily skin care manufacturer Likewise Skincare responds to an article published by The Olive Oil Times which reports that olive oil may have anti aging skin benefits.
According to the article, a new study, which was published in the Public Library of Science, suggests that “a high intake of olive oil and other monounsaturated fats” could protect the skin against aging caused by sun damage. “The cross-sectional study included 1,264 women and 1,655 men, all between 45 and 60 years old. Dietary intake records where completed by participants at least ten times in the first two-and-a-half years of follow up, allowing intake of monounsaturated fatty acids from olive oil and other sources to be estimated. Skin photo-aging was then graded by photographs,” reports The Olive Oil Times. The French study concluded that those with higher intakes of monounsaturated fatty acids from olive oil and other vegetable oils had a lower risk of severe photo-aging.
Lisa Shariat, a representative from skincare company Likewise Skincare, states, “This study reveals a natural and healthy way to combat aging from sun damage. It’s interesting to know that by introducing olive oil to one’s diet, a person will have a lower risk of severe photo-aging. In addition to adding this healthy option to your diet, I highly recommend using a moisturizer with SPF to combat damaging UV rays. By doing this, you’ll be protecting your skin against aging with both your diet and your [daily skin care routine.” Likewise Skincare commends the study and its revealing research.
The article reports that compared to other common vegetable oils, the consumption of olive oil proved to have “the greatest association with reduced aging.” As stated by The Olive Oil Times, “The authors concluded that the results supported the beneficial effect of olive oil on the aging of the skin, although admit that as participants who consumed more olive oil also had healthier overall diets, this may also play a part in the protective effect.”
