"Our geography workshops engage young students in an interactive and fun environment," says Irene Antonoglu, founder of Footprints of the Mind. "Geography Awareness Week helps us drive that message home."

Chicago, IL (October 26, 2012) Footprints of the Mind will be celebrating Geography Awareness Week on Friday, November 16, with its Holidays Around the World geography enrichment workshop in Chicago. Founded in 1987, Geography Awareness Week works to engage the public in fun, educational experiences that draw attention to the importance of Geo-literacy.

The Holidays Around the World workshop, part of Footprints of the Mind’s Wander our World Worskhop series, is designed for children ages four to eight to experience georgaphy by “traveling” to different countries. The workshop allows young travelers the opportunity to visit countries within all seven continents, experience new languages, learn about its people and cultures while creating fun craft projects familiar to the locations. It will focus on holiday traditions central to the countries they will be visiting.

The purpose of Geography Awareness Week is to engage members of the public in fun, educational experiences that draw attention to what geography is, why it is important and how citizens can ensure access to a robust Geography education that prepares them to participate in global activities and make decisions regarding people, places and environments.

Footprints of the Mind’s portfolio of offerings is in line with the Week’s purpose but focuses on children since the company’s founder, Irene Antonoglu, feels strongly that children are not receiving enough geography education in schools or at home. Footprints of the Mind offers interactive workshops and in-class field trips in the Chicagoland area to help parents provide that education for their children.

For those not local to Chicago, Footprints of the Mind offers its award-winning Wander our World app which includes real world photos and music from different countries and is narrated by a child. It also offers its popular Travel on Tuesday which features downloadable hands-on country kits. Each of the kits feature detailed country information, facts, images of major landmarks, a unique craft project complete with easy-to-use instructions as well as a boarding pass and passport stamp to be added to the child’s own “passport” that is mailed to them.

“The goal is to introduce geography to young children in a way that is engaging, entertaining and educational,” says Antonoglu. “Geography Awareness Week is just another way for us to remind ourselves how important teaching geography and learning about other cultures is for our children.”
