Cancer has replaced heart disease as the leading cause of death among U.S. Latinos.
Fairfax, VA (PRWEB) October 29, 2012
On Saturday, November 3, 2012, Life with Cancer, a community for cancer education and support, will hold its third annual Hispanic Survivorship conference titled, “Illuminado el Camino” (Lighting the Way). The conference, offered in partnership with the American Cancer Society and the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, will provide patients, survivors and caregivers the opportunity to get information about cancer and its treatment, learn coping strategies, and engage with a cancer support community.
The conference keynote session will feature Mayte Prida, a television and radio host, author, motivational speaker, breast cancer survivor, and one of the most prominent Hispanic advocates for women and health issues today. The headline session of the morning will feature Dr. Hernan Vargas, breast surgeon and director of the Inova Breast Care Institute at Fair Oaks Hospital, and the afternoon sessions will feature experiential workshops on energy medicine and art therapy.
“Cancer has replaced heart disease as the leading cause of death among U.S. Latinos, who are more likely to rely on hospital emergency departments for their medical care and therefore be diagnosed with advanced stage cancer,” says Veronica Martinez, Hispanic Outreach Coordinator at Life with Cancer.
“Once they are diagnosed with life-threatening illnesses like cancer, Latino immigrants often lack social and other support to help them. This trifecta of circumstances makes a conference such as this especially relevant to the community of Hispanic people affected by the disease,” Martinez adds.
The conference, which is completely free of charge, will be an all-day event and include a complimentary breakfast and lunch, as well as raffles for health-oriented gifts for participants. Shuttle transportation will be available to and from the Dunn Loring metro station. Register by calling 1-855-694-6682 and selecting Option #1.
